In order to ensure quality in all MDT schemes, only trainers & assessors approved and accredited by the South African Mountaineering Development and Training Trust (MDT) may provide training that will lead to MDT accreditation. A service provider will either hold an instructor level award or a limited scope service provider award.
Instructors are individuals who have attained an MDT Instructor Award in either Mountain Walking, Rock Climbing or Mountaineering. Instructors are not Service Providers automatically, but would work under a Service Provider who provides the administartion role. All MDT Instructors must comply with the MDT Code of Conduct.
A Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme is run over a three year period during which time the Instructor must attain a predetermined level of personal experience and instructing experience. At the end of every three years all Instructors have to complete a CPD spreadsheet of their past three years activities inorder to be re -approved.
Instructors must also hold an appropriate, valid First Aid Certificate during this time.
Instructors may instruct or assess any MDT Award relevent to their own award.
Service Providers:
Service Providers are individuals who have attained at least one MDT Instructor Award as set out above. In addition they have applied in writing to the National Committee to be a Service Provider and thereby provide the administration role between candidates and instructors. They must be familair with all aspects of the paper trail between them and the administrator.
Approval System for Service Providers:
Approval as a Service Provider may only be granted to an individual and not an organisation. Initial approval is achieved by submission of the above stated certification to the National Management Committee and is then only for one "Probationary" course which will be observed and moderated. If a favourable report is received, then approval will be granted for the next two years.
Service Provider status is only granted for two years. A review at the end of this time enables the Natcom to consider the status of the Provider and re certify them if all moderations of courses have been up to standard as determined during the moderation of courses.
Workshops:
All Service Providers may organise training events or workshops for other Instructors and Providers. Attendance at an approved workshop at least once during the two year period is mandatory for re-certification.
Moderation:
Moderation of Training and Assessment courses will be undertaken on a random basis and Service Providers will be informed of the outcomes of the moderations to enable them to correct irregularities or to be acknowledged for good courses.
